The Anglican Guild Church of St Dunstan in the West is situated on Fleet Street, just within the borders of the City of London. Replacing the old medieval church, the current building was designed by John Shaw in the Gothic style and completed in 1832. The beautiful and peaceful interior is defined by its unusual octagonal shape and sky blue high vaulted ceiling with many interesting monuments adorning the walls. Famed for its magnificent clock which was made for the original church in 1671, two mythical figures of giants strike the bells on the hour with their clubs, inspiring many literary references including Charles Dickens in Barnaby Rudge and David Copperfield. Other notable features include statues of Queen Elizabeth I which dates from around 1586 and King Lud & his sons which once stood on Ludgate. At the weekends the Romanian Orthodox Church hold their services in front of the glorious iconostasis. St Dunstan's also has an association with the infamous story of Sweeney Todd.
