Simon Crawford-Phillips and Friends: Bach/Kurtág and Schubert

Book now

Wit and grandeur from Schubert, and intimate refinement in Kurtág’s arrangements of Bach in a joyful celebration of the piano duet.

Join pianist and conductor, Simon Crawford-Phillips, for a series of performances this spring with friends at LSO St Luke's on Old Street, just outside the City of London.

The Music

In 1947, Kurtág met and married his ‘soulmate’, the pianist Márta Kinska. She was also his partner at the keyboard, and the pair duetted through the decades, still performing in their nineties. Kurtág’s touching arrangements of Bach are a testament to their intertwined lives.

Schubert wrote as much for piano duet as he did for piano solo. His A-flat Variations are elegantly witty, while his powerful Fantasie in F minor – published after his death – is considered one of his most important works.

The Performers

Duettists Simon Crawford-Phillips and Philip Moore joined forces at the Royal Academy of Music in 1994, and have been performing and winning awards together ever since. This programme of beguiling piano duets beautifully demonstrates their intuitive and empathic musical partnership.
