1. Celebrate Black History Month in the City of London
October is Black History Month and this year’s theme is “Standing Firm in Power and Pride”. Discover a range of events celebrating Black culture, creativity and entrepreneurship, with talks, tours and even Europe’s largest celebration of Black literature, all around the City of London.
Second Saturday at Guildhall Art Gallery (Saturday 11 October): At their next Second Saturday, Guildhall Art Gallery invites you and your family to celebrate Black History Month and strike a pose for the camera and create a photography-based artwork inspired by Liz Johnson Artur's Top Shelf.
Migration Stories: Windrush and The NHS at Barts North Wing (Monday 13 October): A special event to hear about the historical migration narratives discovered in the Barts Health NHS Trust Archives, and a first-hand account of moving to the UK and working for the NHS during this era. Hosted in the newly opened Barts North Wing at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.
Black Culture Market at Leadenhall Market (Thursday 16 October): This special event celebrates Black culture, creativity, and entrepreneurship, featuring a curated line-up of Black-owned businesses, independent brands, and artisans. Visitors can browse unique products ranging from fashion and accessories to art, crafts, and homeware, all while enjoying uplifting Afrobeat music from a live DJ throughout the day.
Black British Book Festival 2025 at Barbican Centre (Sunday 19 October): Join Europe’s largest celebration of Black literature. Founded by Selina Brown, this vibrant, family-friendly festival champions emerging talent, showcases iconic voices and puts Black British authors centre stage. Across one powerful day, expect thought-provoking panels, bold conversations, joyful children’s sessions and the UK’s largest Black book marketplace.
Black History in the Culture Mile – A Walking Tour (Tuesday 28 October): Join renowned expert Tony Warner on a walking tour which uncovers the fascinating stories of Black Londoners in this unique area of the Square Mile. This is a free tour commissioned by The Culture Mile BID.

3. Marvel at the annual Goldsmiths' Fair (23 to 28 September and 30 September to 5 October)
For more than four decades, Goldsmiths’ Fair has brought together a selection of the UK’s best contemporary jewellers and silversmiths.
With 136 exhibitors working across different disciplines and materials, the Fair gives visitors the opportunity to buy directly from makers and to discuss their skills, practices and inspirations, accompanied by a dedicated talks programme and exhibitions.

4. Find fun and engaging family activities to keep the kids entertained
Keep the kids entertained with these exciting and educational activities happening across The City of London this month.
Second Saturday at Guildhall Art Gallery (Saturday 11 October): A revolving programme of family activities organised by Guildhall Art Gallery. This month's Second Saturday celebrates Black History Month with creative activities and story times, for children aged 3 to 13 with their families.
Monster Art Club (Saturdays): Get creative at the Barbican Library every Saturday from 2 to 3.30pm. This free event provides all the materials for drawing, colouring, and imaginative crafting - perfect for budding artists of all ages.
Rhyme Time at Artizan Library (Thursdays): Every Thursday from 10 to 10.30am, bring your little ones (under 5s) to a free lively session filled with action songs, musical instruments, and puppets.
F1 Arcade (Monday to Sunday): Feel the adrenaline of the Formula 1 track at this immersive racing experience. Located in One New Change, the F1 Arcade offers simulators designed for drivers aged 7 and up, with multiple skill levels to suit everyone from beginners to pros. When you’re ready to refuel, the menu has something for everyone, from burgers to family-style sharing plates.

Family Activities at Tower Bridge (Saturday 11 October): Designed to entertain children of all ages, Tower Bridge’s Family Activities are included in the price of entry, plus, receive a Family Activities Pass offering free entry on any Family Activities Day in the next six months. October Half Term Family Day at Guildhall Art Gallery (Wednesday 29 October): Visit Guildhall Art Gallery for a fun family day celebrating the City's annual open-air art exhibition - Sculpture in the City. It's free!
The Secret City with DutchPot Stories – A family workshop (Thursday 30th October): Discover the hidden magic of London in this family storytelling workshop at Theatre Deli. This playful, hands-on session is perfect for curious minds of all ages and encourages everyone to listen, imagine and become a storyteller of their own.
Explore Roman Childhood: Toys, Games and Playtime at London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE (Thursday 30th October): Step back in time to experience playtime as a Roman child. Join toy making workshops, interactive games and discover the artefacts that once entertained Roman families. Tickets: Free, but booking is recommended.
Storytelling with Laura Sampson at Theatre Deli (Friday 31 October): Join British-Caribbean storyteller Laura Sampson [on the spookiest day of the year] for a folktale-inspired adventure, full of beating drums, silly voices and a little bit of magic. Tickets: £5 (includes 1 adult and 1 child).

5. Celebrate the launch of Kelli Anderson’s new book Alphabet in Motion (Thursday 9 October)
The evening will celebrate the launch of Kelli’s new book Alphabet in Motion — an extraordinary piece of paper engineering that brings type to life with pop-ups, projections, and design history.

7. Join a free lecture by Gresham College (Wednesday 8, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 October)
Gresham College has been providing free, public lectures since 1597 when Sir Thomas Gresham founded the college to bring the ‘new learning’ to Londoners. Today the College continues Sir Thomas's vision, bringing some of the world's most brilliant minds to speak in fields ranging across the arts and sciences. Here's what's on this month:

Whether you’re an art lover or history obsessed, The City of London has tons of fascinating exhibitions and museums to explore every month. Here are just some of the ones we would recommend exploring this October.
New exhibitions and displays opening this month:
Dirty Looks (until 25 January 2026): From ruined romantic evening gowns to faux-stained jeans, mud-splashed dresses and upcycled outfits, the fashion world has never been dirtier. Featuring icons like Hussein Chalayan, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Miguel Adrover and Maison Margiela, alongside emerging designers such as Elena Velez, Yuima Nakazato and IAMISIGO, this exhibition at the Barbican explores fashion's past and present, possible future.
Wizardry in Wood (Tuesday 28 to Friday 31 October): Since its inception, Wizardry in Wood has become one of the world’s premier woodturning events, drawing art lovers, collectors, and wood enthusiasts alike. The 2025 exhibition will continue this tradition, presenting both contemporary and traditional woodturning art across a diverse array of styles.
Building the Bank - 100 years on (until Spring 2027): This new exhibition uncovers the fascinating transformation of the Bank of England’s Threadneedle Street home.
Heritage Gallery Exhibition: Epping Forest (27 September 2025 to 30 April 2026): A new display has opened this month at the Heritage Gallery where a selection of items showcasing the rich history of Epping Forest will be on display. Some of the highlights will include seeing a Forest Keeper’s daily diary from 1903 and a decorative invitation to attend the visit of Queen Victoria in 1882.

Evelyn De Morgan: The Modern Painter in Victorian London (until 4 January 2026): One of the most remarkable artists of her generation, Evelyn De Morgan’s powerful work is on display at Guildhall Art Gallery this year in a major exhibition that premiered two newly restored artworks.
Jane and Louise Wilson: Performance of Entrapment (until 17 January 2026): Inspired by the Roman temple of Mithras, and artefacts discovered on the site, Performance of Entrapment offers a powerful reflection on ancient shrines, time and renewal in an immersive installation which weaves together film, archaeology, and contemporary art.
Blondie in Camera 1978 (until 5 January 2026): Blondie takes centre-stage in a free photographic exhibition at the Barbican Music Library.
Sculpture in the City 14th Edition (until Spring 2026): Artworks by Ai Weiwei, Andrew Sabin, and Jane and Louise Wilson have recently been unveiled in The City of London as part of the 14th edition of Sculpture in the City.
Railway 200 free exhibition (until 1 November): Take inspiration from the past, present and future of the railway at Liverpool Street’s new exhibition space, created by Network Rail as part of the nationwide celebration of 200 years of train travel.
Exhibition: London in the Second World War (until 19 February 2026): In this free exhibition at The London Archives you can explore stories of Londoners during the Second World War. The London Archives is located in Clerkenwell (between Farringdon and Angel), just outside the boundary of The City of London.

10. Visit one of Roman London’s most fascinating remains (Saturdays)
Beneath the curious old pathways of The City of London lies Billingsgate Roman House and Baths, a rich piece of Roman history surviving 2,000 years of building, fires and bombings and are one of Roman London’s most fascinating remains. First built around A.D. 150 then extended a hundred years later, it was occupied right through to the end of Roman London in the early 5th century A.D.
Public tours of the ruins take place on Saturdays between April and November and advance booking is required.

11. Put on your dancing shoes
Dance into the rhythm of October at Bishopsgate Institute, offering a diverse selection of dance courses and social dance events. From Swing Den to Queer Tango classes, there is something to suit every style and preference.
This month they are also hosting a day of taster classes for complete beginners, on Saturday 25 October. They've teamed up with Stardance (Nick Miles), the Pink Jukebox, Swing Patrol, Queer Salsa and Queer Tango London to welcome you to the dancefloor and to guide you to take those first steps.

12. A Piano Masterclass is happening this month with acclaimed pianist Sir Stephen Hough (Tuesday 14 October)
Witness internationally acclaimed pianist Sir Stephen Hough work with outstanding Guildhall School pianists in this free, open morning masterclass.

13. Take a guided tour of The City of London (daily)
Join expert City of London Guides for daily themed walking tours departing from the City Information Centre near St Paul’s. From Roman ruins and Wren’s churches to literary legends and hidden histories, there’s something new to discover every day of the week.
You can also take a free introductory tour of Guildhall Art Gallery, conducted by Guildhall Art Gallery’s team of City Guides, which are available every day, from Tuesday to Sunday, at 12:15pm and 1:15pm and last 30 to 45 minutes. No booking is required.

14. Experience the music of Shostakovich, Gubaidulina and Stravinsky (Tuesday 30 October)
Ryan Bancroft and the LSO journey to magical worlds, as Stravinsky and Gubaidulina breathe vivid, visceral life into Russian fairy tales. They are joined by the brilliant, expressive violinist Clara-Jumi Kang for Shostakovich.

15. Attend a fascinating talk at Dr Johnson’s House (Wednesday 15 October)
Hear a talk by Sir Rupert Gavin as he charts English’s extraordinary path to becoming the most global language today spoken by 1.6 billion all over the world.

16. Join a Barbican Architecture Tour (daily from 11am to 4pm)
Running daily, Barbican’s 90-minute Architecture Tours cover the vast, bold and brutal Barbican estate. Led by expert guides, the tour covers the Barbican Centre and surrounding Brutalist estate, exploring the site’s little-known nooks and crannies, venturing through high walks, leafy courts and sweeping crescents, giving visitors an insight into the vision and ambition behind the complex’s design and its past, present and future.

17. See Thomas Adès as he leads the LSO in Poul Ruders' kaleidoscopic Second Guitar Concerto (Sunday 19 October)
The LSO welcomes composer and conductor Thomas Adès for the first concert in a series exploring Nordic music alongside a selection of Adès' own works.

18. Discover a historic gem, Petticoat Lane
If you haven’t been yet, this is a market everyone should add to their bucket list to visit. Petticoat Lane traces its history all the way back to the 1650s and is one of London’s true historic gems.
When visiting the market, you will be able to explore a unique mix of independent shops, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, a weekday food market, and it has a fantastic Sunday street market to explore which is open from 9am to 3pm.

19. Leadenhall Market’s series of pop-up weekend markets continues this month (Saturday 11 and Sunday 26 October)
Leadenhall Market’s popular series of free-to-enter vintage furniture, fashion and craft weekend markets are back this month in its stunning glass-covered cobbled walkways. This month they are taking place on Saturday 11 October and Sunday 26 October.

20. Take a tour of the Grade I listed Mansion House (3, 9, 17 and 27 October)
Located in the vibrant heart of The City of London, Mansion House is the residence and office of the Lord Mayor, who serves as powerful ambassador for The City and UK’s financial and professional services.
While typically closed to the public, Grade I listed Georgian Mansion House will be opening its doors for exclusive guided tours to small, organised groups on Friday 3 October, Thursday 9 October, Friday 17 October and Monday 27 October.

22. Attend the Bank of England’s spooky Museum Late (Thursday 16 October)
Step into mystery and history at this one-of-a-kind event and surround yourself with wares and wonders from crafters and makers from across the UK.
This free-entry market set in the Museum's Stock Office will host craft stalls and music as well as the chance to experience the Museum after-hours. Not spooky enough for you? Delve into the realm of vault ghosts and Bank giants through their haunted storytelling experience.

23. Enjoy gin, history and tasting at Dr Johnson’s House (Thursday 9 October) or a glass of Prosecco and literary history (Thursday 23 October)
A delightful evening of gin, history, and tasting, awaits you in the historic surroundings of Dr Johnson’s House on Thursday 9 October. Enjoy a refreshing gin and tonic on arrival before their curator takes you on a journey through the fascinating history of gin - from its notorious reputation in Georgian London to its place as a beloved British spirit today.

29. Tuck into a top-tier Sunday roast in The City of London (Sundays)
Sundays are made for roast dinners, and The City of London has plenty of standout spots to satisfy your cravings. Whether you're after traditional trimmings or a modern twist, here are a few favourites to try this month:
The Jugged Hare (near Barbican): A celebration of seasonal British produce, with a focus on game, foraged ingredients, and bold flavours.

31. Celebrate Octoberfest at Munich Cricket Club (18 September to 1 November)
From mid-September through the end of October, Munich Cricket Club brings the spirit of Oktoberfest to Tower Hill.
Set beneath the historic archways, this central London Bierkeller is the place to enjoy steins of German beer, hearty sausage platters, and the sounds of a live oompah band. Whether you're going all-in on lederhosen or just stopping by for a festive pint, it's a fun way to toast the season.
32. Head to CityPoint to celebrate Octoberfest (29 September to 2 October)

33. Visit a new friendly bar just beside the Gherkin
Leafi is a new bar and restaurant that has just recently opened in The City of London. By day, they’re a vibrant takeaway deli offering a wide choice of hot homemade food and delicious seasonal salads. 34. Last chance to play padel table tennis in The City
This is your last month to take part on London Sports Festival in The City of London with Padel Table Tennis at Tower Suites Walkway. Think table tennis but with additional opportunities to bounce the ball off the walls around you.
