Winter Festival 2 – English String Music, from 1900 to 1939

Check availability

Join this exploration of English string music from a pivotal time in history

Join the London Virtuosi Ensemble at Temple Church for A Terrible Beauty, an evening exploring the richness and emotional depth of English string music from 1900 to 1939.

Led by conductor Rachael Montesino Young, the newly formed ensemble presents a programme spanning the sweeping beauty of Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, the poignant lyricism of Elgar’s Sospiri and Elegy, and the rhythmic energy of Michael Tippett’s Concerto for Double String Orchestra.

Featuring Dame Harriet Walter, George Hlawiczka as leader and musicians from the London Virtuosi Ensemble, the concert reflects a period of profound change, balancing nostalgia, serenity and uncertainty through some of the most evocative works in the English string repertoire.

An atmospheric evening of music exploring beauty, fragility and the changing world of the early twentieth century.

Time: Tuesday 1 December from 7.30pm

Tickets: Tickets are priced from £15 and can be reserved in advance.
